There are several ways to treat heartburn. Heartburn is
one of the most common
health problems for the modern world people. With everybody being constantly in a hurry and no time to sit down and eat it is no wonder why it
happens.
The main preconditions for a healthy stomach and
esophagus are eating slowly and regularly well balanced food which should preferably be home maid and not bought from the fast food
restaurant.
But unfortunately most of us consume mainly
ready to eat food and spend no more than a few minutes on that. The result is heartburn which if not treated on time may lead to much serious
problems.
Let us start with the definition of what a
heartburn is - it is a process where the body causes the contents of the stomach to flow back up into the esophagus. The valve that controls
this action known as the lower esophageal sphincter is relaxed and the acids from the stomach reflux into the esophagus irritating its
delicate lining.
Knowing the causes for the heartburn it will be
easier for you to avoid them. They include eating large amounts of food, especially before you go to sleep, or consuming citrus fruits and
juices, spicy and highly seasoned foods, raw onions and vinegar. Also drinks like coffee, decaffeinated coffee and colas, teas and
alcohols contribute to heartburn.
That is the reason why you have to change
completely your lifestyle habits in order to treat or at least ease heartburn.
Another thing you should be careful with is the
pressure that is put on your stomach. That's why try not to lift heavy items after you have had a meal because the pressure from the heavy
weight may cause the stomach acids to reflux into the esophagus and induce heartburn.
Other risky conditions include taking some
irritating medications, as well as pregnancy, hiatal hernia, being obese, gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD.
Besides changing your lifestyle, there are other
methods to treat heartburn. You can also take antacids such as Tagamet, Pepcid AC, Zantac or
Prilosec which neutralize the acid buildup in the stomach. Or you can get some foaming antacid like Gaviscon which floats on the top of the
stomach contents and thus prevents heartburn when acid reflux occurs.
Apart from that the symptoms of heartburn may be
controlled with acid reducers or acid blockers which are part of a class of drugs called Histamine receptor blockers. If the acid reducers
cannot control heartburn, other way to treat heartburn symptoms and pain is to resort to Proton Pump Inhibitors or PPI's which are available
only by a prescription from your doctor.
The PPI's work by shutting down the acid
production within your stomach. But of course, the most important is which of these medicines works best for you because everybody is being
affected by treatments in an individual way.
